To balance the volume of the reclaimed water coming out of the SSWRP and its subsequent recharge, the city decided to install the vadose zone wells in phases in conjunction with the expansion of the SSWRP. Accordingly, the wells will be installed in four phases at two different locations in the city service area. Vadose definition is - of, relating to, or being water or solutions in the earth's crust above the permanent groundwater level. Preferential pathways allow rapid and non-uniform water movement in the subsurface due to strong heterogeneity of texture, composition, and hydraulic properties. Understanding the importance of preferential pathways is crucial, because they have strong impact on flow and transport hydrodynamics in the unsaturated zone.

Precipitated water must filter down through the vadose zone, or unsaturated zone , to reach the zone of saturation, where more "horizontal" groundwater flow  [Moisture flux at the ground surface significantly impacts flux in the unsaturated vadose zone]. Environmental impact on soil conditions.

the position at which the groundwater (the water in the soil's pores) is at atmospheric pressure ("vadose" is Latin for "shallow"). Scope.

In coarse-grained mediums the fringe may be flat at the top and thin, whereas in finer grained material it will tend to be higher and may be very irregular along the upper surface. The vadose zone, also termed the unsaturated zone, extends from the top of the ground surface to the watertable. vadose zone.

The vadose zone is the interval between the crop root zone and the water table, and is a critically important region for storage, transport and transformation of chemicals that can impact groundwater quality.

What is Vadose Zone? (1) Located below land surface and above groundwater level (2) Contains the thee-phases of solid, liquid, and gas Solid phase: mineral grains (soil formed by in situ weathering, sediment transported from somewhere else, unweathered bedrock) and organic matter (the remains of plants and animals under decay) The vadose zone is known to play a critical role within the biosphere: (1) as a storage medium to supply water to the plants and atmosphere, and (2) as a controlling agent in the transmission of recharging water as well as contaminants from the land surface to groundwater . Past interest in the vadose zone has largely been a result of public concern about the need to protect groundwater reserves for drinking and agricultural purposes. (b) Vadose zone monitoring shall not be used as the sole release detection method of non-visual monitoring where the monitoring well cannot be located within the backfill surrounding the tank, or where the existing ground water level or the highest anticipated ground water level, including intermittent perched ground water, is less than 10 feet below the bottom of the tank.

VADOSE ZONE HYDROLOGY 1. What is Vadose Zone? (1) Located below land surface and above groundwater level (2) Contains the thee-phases of solid, liquid, and gas Solid phase: mineral grains (soil formed by in situ weathering, sediment transported from somewhere else, unweathered bedrock) and organic matter (the remains of plants and animals under decay)

It includes the surface soil, unsaturated sub-surface soil including weathered and unweathered material, and the capillary fringe. The vadose zone can be shallow or very deep depending on how far below the surface is the water table. Vadose Zone and Soil Studies Texas Soil Observation Network (TxSON) Texas Soil Moisture Observation Network (TxSON) is an intensively-monitored 36 km grid cell (1300 km2) located near Fredericksburg, Texas, along the Pedernales River and within the middle reaches of the lower Colorado River. The vadose zone can be characterized as a complex subsurface system in which intricate physical and biogeochemical processes occur in response to a variety of natural forces and human activities. The Vadose Zone Research Group at Texas A&M carries out research on a wide spectrum of topics related to the unsaturated zone like (but not restricted to) numerical modeling of hydrological processes, understanding soil bio-geo-chemistry, understanding scaling issues in hydrology, and, field- scale observations and measurements.
